Carla received her BS in psychology and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Southern Oregon University. She received her MS in Applied Psychology with a Concentration in Mental Health Counseling from Southern Oregon University.

Carla has been consulting with athletes, jury trial attorneys and performers since 2006. Athletes, teams, and coaches of all ages, ability levels, and sports have sought Carla’s services. She has also worked with performing artists. Carla has given numerous regional presentations at professional conferences and has been a guest speaker at several coaching clinics throughout the U.S.

She is currently the Subject Matter Expert and Chief Lecturer for The Successful Interplay Between Professional Sports Careers and Sports Psychology: A Clinical Perspective of a Winning Combination and Psychodrama, Creativity and the Training of Jury Trial Attorneys.

In addition, she has worked as a Co-Presenter for the Mental Skills and Mental Strategies Lead to Maximum Performance training workshops and has been a dedicated fundraising volunteer for TACA (Talking about Curing Autism) through her work with celebrity charity events. Her professional affiliations include the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA).

Angela is a tremendous public relations resource and she very graciously shared a lot of information about how people can begin the PR process on their own and /or hire a PR firm to work with them.

The Importance Of PR (excerpted from Angela’s book Lights! Camera! Action! The Power of PR) Please note that this book was written with the medical community in mind so the word “practice” can easily be replaced with the word “business”.

“It is estimated that the average person is bombarded with more than 3,000 different marketing messages each day. The proliferation of junk mail, diluted media outlets and the influx of other practices competing for the same piece of the pie is enough to make you wonder how your message will ever been seen or heard.

Publicity is defined as a marketing function designed to educate and increase public awareness to the internal and external functions and distinction of an enterprise. Simply put, media exposure gained through TV, newspapers, magazines, radio, and the internet is indispensable toward to success and image of your practice.”

Angela sent me her 10 Golden Rules of PR after the interview and I am delighted to share them with you here.

10 GOLDEN RULES OF PR

1. Appearance and perception are everything; understand how you are perceived by the media.
2. Before you contact a publication or TV show, be an expert. Watch the show or read the publication first.
3. Know the breaking news and current trends in your specialty that is currently being reported by mainstream media.
4. PHONE, PHONE, PHONE. The best way to have a story placed is to talk directly with the media.
5. Always have a media kit with you, or ready at your practice/business to immediately mail out upon request. Also have suitable stories complete, ready and prepared to send out at a moment’s notice.
6. Have your elevator pitch practiced and ready.
7. Smile! Yes, there is competition, but when you talk to the media you are the only voice the are listening to, so be persistent
8. HONESTY, HONESTY, HONESTY. Stories that you present to the media should be as factually accurate as possible. Lying and deliberately misleading the media can attract highly negative PR.
9. Never negatively comment on any publication, TV show, person, company or competitor. It’s a small world. Thoughtless comments can come back to bite you.
10. “Sex Sells Soap”. Very few ideas are new and unique. It is how an idea is presented that “sells” it to the media.
