Thank you for those kind comments Milton. I am a huge supporter of local businesses and entrepreneurship is my passion so I really did want to give them a chance. Like you, I hope that they did take something positive away from it and begin to consciously be more professional in those oh-so-important initial contacts.

Have a great day!

Great post! It says a lot that you gave them the benefit of the doubt after the first call and tried the second number before shredding the flier. Hopefully, the experience of losing one potential client will spur them into action to ensure that they'll lose no more...at least, not for the same reason : )

Blessings to you!

Hi Jeff and thanks for commenting.

It really depends on the business you are in whether you should answer the phone each time it rings or not. And of course, it is very much a personal and business decision that you will make as you grow your business.

In this particular case, they would have been far better served to have a professional sounding recording that lets callers know who they are, a brief description of their services and when the caller could reasonably expect a return call, such as within 24 hours, end of business day, etc.

Thanks Susan!

As I noted in the post, first impressions count and and I found this experience both interesting and educational. I did take the time to very politely explain why I would not be doing business with them. Not with the intention to hurt any feelings or irritate them, but with the hopes that they would eventually give some very real thought to being professional from the outset, and therefore avoid losing customers before they even acquire them. I will never know of course, but do wish them well in their business endeavors.

Denise

Love your posts! This one in particular is outstanding. As a concierge, customer service is king and if a so-called professional can't provide basic phone manners, then they might as well not be in business. Well said. Thanks for sharing!
