How to Shut Off Facebook Places

I have been seeing a lot of anguished postings on Facebook today about Facebook places so went on a hunt for information to share.

Facebook Places, like existing location-based apps, uses GPS so people can “check in” on their mobile phones, letting friends know where they are and what they’re up to. At this time it is only available for the iPhone but Facebook says that versions for the Android system and Blackberry are in the works.

How to change (or get rid of) Places

To change who can see your check-ins:

Log in to Facebook
Click “Account” in the top right corner.
Scroll down to “Privacy Settings”
Click “Customize Settings” toward the bottom of the page.
Your default for “Places I check in” should be “Friends Only.” You can click that box to expand who can see your check-ins or, if you want more privacy, click that box, then scroll down to “Customize,” where you can specify which of your friends can, or can’t, see what you do with Facebook Places.

Here, you can click “Only Me,” meaning nobody else can see you check in. We’re not sure what the point of that would be — but if you want essentially to shut down the possibility of using Places from your account, there it is.

Deciding on “People Here Now”:

Follow the above steps to “Customize Settings.”
You’ll see a line called “Include me in ‘People Here Now’ after I check in.” That’s the one that lets other people at the same spot, not necessarily your friends, see that you’re there.
The default should have this turned off. If you want to be included in “People Here Now,” click the box marked “Enable.” If you don’t, just leave it alone. If, for some reason, the “Enable” box is checked, just click it to opt out.

If you don’t want your friends to check you in to places:

Follow the above steps to “Customize Settings.”
Under the heading “Things Others Share,” you’ll see the line “Friends can check me in to Places.”
Click on the box marked “Select One,” and you can enable or disable this feature.

Beware of LinkedIn Phishing Emails

You are very likely getting a lot of ”Join my network on LinkedIn” whether you are a LinkedIn member or not. With a little due diligence you can determine whether this is a true message from LinkedIn or a phishing email designed to separate you from your account credentials and thereby hijack your account.

It used to be fairly easy (and often entertaining!) to spot SPAM or Phishing attempts. In many cases English was clearly not the criminals’ first language. The sentence structures were terrible and there were spelling errors throughout the e-mail. Unfortunately, that’s not the case any more. The e-mails are written well enough to pass as legitimate correspondence from reputable companies such as LinkedIn. In the case of the email below, it is formatted exactly like a legitimate message but the URL is formatted to go to imperialcraftsman.com/x.html

Despite improving their spelling and grammar, there are still dead giveaways if you pay attention. Here are some things to look for to help spot a fraudulent e-mail. By hovering your mouse over any links in the email you will be able to determine which is authentic and what is not. Notice that all hyperlinks lead to a page that is clearly not on the LinkedIn domain.

I encourage you to get in the habit of deleteing messages from MySpace, LinkedIn, FaceBook, Paypal or other sites that you may be active on and just make it a point to login from the URL of the site in question when you need to check on your account activity, approve friend requests or respond to invitations.

If you think you have clicked on any of these emails be sure to go in and change your password immediately. In fact, this would be a good time to update your passwords on all of your networking sites just to be safe.
